Meet Gudetama, The Adorable Lazy Egg Who Just Wants To Be Left Alone
Finally, a cartoon character that perfectly encapsulates how we all feel on lazy Sundays and Monday mornings!
From the creators of Hello Kitty, meet Gudetama - the adorably lazy egg whose sole purpose in life is to lie around and wait to be eaten
Introduced in 2013, Sanrio’s egg-turned-mascot character gets its name from a combination of the words “gude“ (pronouced goo-deh), which is a Japanese onomatopoeia for describing something or someone with no energy or strength, and “tama” from the word tamago, which means egg in Japanese.
rocketnews24.comDepicted with an eternally indifferent face, Gudetama has absolutely no motivation in life. All it does is lounge around and whine about not wanting to do anything.
So, kinda like how we behave when our alarms start blaring on weekday mornings, really...
Gudetama is not exactly a single character. It's a representation of every egg in existence since the age of dinosaurs...
According to Sanrio, the little guy's favourite things to do include taking naps on a bed of rice...
Eggs are one of the most versatile foods in the world, and Gudetama is no different. Besides being a wobbly raw egg, he also appears as a sunny side-up egg served with strips of bacon...
And even as a tamago (a type of Japanese omelette made by rolling several pieces of cooked egg together)!
Gudetama - who was introduced by Sanrio in 2013 - has quite a huge following on the Internet, especially on Tumblr (just track the "gudetama" tag) and Twitter, where it has 444k followers!
There is also an entire range of merchandise dedicated to the lovable cartoon character, including soft toys, ceramic mugs, bags, and phone cases, amongst others
Check out some official Gudetama merchandise on Sanrio's website.
That's not all. Sanrio has also released several short videos of Gudetama's "adventures". Some of them are pretty weird... like that one time a dog started licking its pert little butt:
It has a theme song and a personal cheerleader too!
Yup, it's a guy dressed as an egg yolk. We don't know why either.
