Why Cold-Pressed Juices Are 'In' And Where To Find Them In KL

Raw and organic, this new trend in fruit and vegetable juices is fast becoming a game-changer among health-conscious Malaysians.

The modern lifestyle is geared towards healthy eating as of late, leading to the rise and rise of health food trends. So, what's the latest 'in' thing to have hit health-conscious Malaysians these days?

The answer: Cold-pressed juices. Compared to juices produced from normal juicing methods and blenders, these juices are said to contain more vitamins, minerals, proteins, and enzymes.

What's the difference between normal juices and cold-pressed juices?

Conventional juicing involves slicing and grinding fruits and vegetables with fast-spinning blades. The "rough" process leads to overheating and oxidisation, resulting in a drastic loss of nutrients in the end product.

Cold-pressed juicing, on the other hand, employs a process where the right amount of pressure is exerted to minimise heat and oxidisation. The "slow-press" method also ensures that juice extraction is maximised from pulp.

Cold-pressed juicing involves extracting juice by a slow and careful process of hydraulically extracting fruit and vegetable juice (pressing and grinding fruits and vegetables without adding heat, hence the term “cold-pressed”) and this process exerts just enough pressure to extract the juice.

Cold press juicing is so precise with its process of extraction that there is minimal air and heat so very little oxidation occurs. This means you can enjoy your cold pressed juice up to 3 days after extraction, all the while preserving its vitamins, enzymes, trace minerals and overall nutrients up to five times more than any other juicer.

The pressing method is proven to have produced more juice and also has a more uniformed texture and palate compared to normal juicing. Adding to the health factor, water and sugar are usually not added to cold-pressed juices, and neither are binders and preservatives.

Health Benefits: Cold-pressed converts believe that the pure juices contributes to clearer skin, regular bowel movements, reducing acidity, and even retraining your taste buds!

“A healthy body has a balanced pH. Inflammation occurs when bodies become overly acidic from consuming highly acidic food such like fried chicken, coffee, alcohol and sugary food. Inflammation can lead to chronic illness,” Strip Juice's Nicole Tan said.

Another benefit is that you eventually start to retrain your tastebuds and ultimately lose the craving for hot chips and other fatty foods.

Cold-pressed juices also serve as a solution to the "five a day" rule to staying healthy, as it is almost impossible to munch on five servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

The short answer is: there’s just too much to eat. The long answer is: Unless you are part rabbit, you won’t be able to consume that much fruit and vegetables everyday, but by juicing it, you can down your 5-a-day and then some in one or two glasses.

Plus, in this liquid form, you’ve already harvested all the micronutrients from your fruit and vege, now it’s never been easier for your body to absorb all that green goodness.

Does that mean you can make your own cold-pressed juices at home? Optimistically, yes, but there are a few things to note:

1. Slow juicers are pretty pricey, costing more than RM350 for something that only serves one function.

2. Okay, so you already have one lying around at home or decided to splurge on a slow juicer. You still have to have plenty of fresh produce on-hand, ready for juicing. venusbuzz.com
