The Sessions Court today found activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim guilty of sedition and sentenced him to one year in jail for a speech last year in which he is said to have called for a change of government through undemocratic means.

“Guilty,” Adam wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter from the court this morning. “The mitigation process is still going on. Will update #MansuhAktaHasutan,” he said in a following tweet. “Having different opinion is apparently a crime now according to our dearest prosecutor," he said in another tweet.

For first-time offenders like Adam, a conviction under Section 4 (1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 carries a maximum jail term of three years or a fine of up to RM5,000 or both. “We have obtained a stay order on the basis that we will be appealing against the sentence and conviction,” Adam’s lawyer, Latheefa Koya, told reporters outside the courtroom. Adam was released after he posted a RM5,000 bail with one surety today.

In an immediate reaction, Human Rights Watch said Adam’s conviction and sentencing showed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s government was showing “authoritarian tendencies one usually associates with single-party rule rather than democracy”.

Amnesty International says Adam Adli should be released immediately

Amnesty International says Adam Adli should be released immediately, and called for the repeal of section 124(b) of the Penal Code.

Image via imgur.com

Amnesty International has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Malaysian student activist Adam Adli, who was arrested under the Sedition Act solely for peacefully expressing his views.

abnxcess.com

The Malaysian government must stop using the Sedition Act and provisions in the Penal Code to stifle people’s right to free expression, and it must release all those who have been arrested merely for the peaceful expression of their political beliefs or dissenting opinions.

amnesty.org

Amnesty International calls on the Malaysian government to repeal section 124(b) of the Penal Code. In addition, it must release Adam Adli from detention immediately and unconditionally. The Malaysian authorities must ensure that peaceful political dissent is protected both in law and practice.

amnesty.org

Section 124(B) is overly broad and vague. It imposes a chilling effect on free expression in violation of Malaysia’s constitution and international legal obligations. It gives an unfettered discretion to police officers to arrest and detain a person.
