“It takes Pizza Hut a lot to tell a disabled person that he should feel lousy about his disabilities,” said Anthony Thanasayan. “The restaurant manager asked me to leave my wheelchair outside and walk into the restaurant as she claimed it was their outlet’s policy,” he said.
"I was so humiliated. I went home and cried that night, because never in my life have people discriminated me because of my disability.
"I fought very hard all my life for the rights of the disabled and never to this day and age haveb I been spoken to that way," he said.
He added that during the fiasco, even the shopping mall’s customer service representative who had rushed to the incident, heard the manager asking him to walk into the restaurant.
Thanasayan, who had been on wheelchair for the past 10 years said: “I struggled for years with disability not to be told by Pizza Hut that I am not good for their pizza’s.”
"I am not against Pizza Hut but I am against the attitude of some people in Pizza Hut who mistreat the disabled," he said.

Pizza Hut's senior staff have apologised for barring wheelchair-bound Petaling Jaya city councillor Anthony Thanasayan from dining at the fast food eatery's Mid Valley Megamall branch on Monday.
yahoo.comThe apology was tendered during a three-and-a-half hour meeting between Thanasayan and Pizza Hut staff at a hotel in the Mid Valley complex this morning. During the meeting, Thanasayan accompanied the Pizza Hut staff to the branch to demonstrate how he was stopped from dining there on Monday by the branch manager.

"They had acknowledged and accepted the fault of the manager. They apologised fully for what had happened," Thanasayan told Malaysiakini after the meeting.
"They did not justify or defend the outlet manager. The discussion went well," said Thanasayan, 53, an activist for the disabled community and animal rights.

“I met with the top management people this morning that showed their concern and they apologised unconditionally, while offered to help combat discrimination,” he said.
Thanasayan added that the company staff were also open to his suggestions on how to ensure that Pizza Hut outlets are barrier-free, that the staff are properly trained and on conducting spot checks on the staff.

"In response to claims stating that Pizza Hut has a policy of not welcoming guests on wheelchairs, we would like to reiterate that at Pizza Hut, there is no such policy in which we discriminate our customers with special needs," Low said.

“Due to the setup of the outlet which is narrow for wheelchair access, it would be most inconvenient and uncomfortable for Mr Anthony Thanasayan to have sat in the area that he had requested,” it added.
Senior General Manager Low Kang Moon also explained in the statement that Pizza Hut has arranged several times for a meeting with Thanasayan to apologise and explain, but its offers were not reciprocated.

When Thanasayan requested to choose where he wanted to sit with his friend in the half-empty restaurant, he was told point blank by Pizza Hut restaurant manager Niq Ribiya that her outlet had a strict and clear policy not to welcome customers in wheelchairs.

She went on to say that these were the instructions given to her by her Area Manager by the name of Ms Rozita.
Thanasayan and his friend were denied of a meal in Pizza Hut. A complaint was immediately made to Mid Valley's Customer Care Manager Kenny Tan who rushed to the scene.

I have filed a complain, on behalf of all the orang kurang upaya in Malaysia, for the lack of mannerism of one of your manager, to the world Pizza Hut HQ.
Although I am not a disabled person I do not think it is okay for anyone to be mistreated.
Plus, according to the stories related in this thread alone, at least TWO of your Pizza Hut shops have barred people in wheelchair from enjoying their meal.
I hope you conduct a thorough investigation over this matter, and then report back to us.

The bill contains normal things la (number of person, bill. number and what is ordered). But, what shocked me is that they had space called ‘RACE’.I guess since we were all wearing tudung, they labelled us as 0, which means MALAY. Later, when we went to pay…we had no service charge and no tax charge.

Still in shock, I peeped into another bill in the counter. In that bill, under the race space, it was labelled as C (which I guess means Chinese). That bill had service and tax charges!!! One of my Sri Lankan friends was labelled as Indian it seems and she also had to pay service and tax charges a few weeks back.
