This tiny stretch of road in Shanghai has more than 60 surveillance cameras pointed at it

The apparently excessive surveillance cameras that were densely crowded on one overhead bar have confused many drivers and shortly after one curious driver took a group of pictures of them and posted online, the pictures have drawn major media coverage.

Locals told reporters that in April, the poles only had 24 cameras attached, in the last few months authorities added an extra 36.

Government officials, who did not coordinate when the cameras were being installed, have been accused of wasting public money and overkill.

The excessive surveillance has led to allegations that public money has been squandered after images of the two beams covered in devices were posted on social media.

Reports in the Chinese press claimed they were put there by a local electronics company there for testing purposes

But Chinese netizens were still worried - "From every angle, no blind side, it is capable of distinguish male from female mosquito!" one NetEase commenter wrote.

The devices are likely to act as a deterrent to motorists, despite the controversy.

While some urbanites and rivers are reported to have said "to hell with the cameras, as long as we are abiding by the law, no amount of cameras will cause us to be afraid", members of the online community were infuriated.

It was later revealed that the cameras had all been put up by a range of departments, none of which had taken the time to find out whether there were already cameras in place

The monitors cover each side of the road, despite the fact it has not been deemed as dangerous.

The police, local traffic monitoring departments, the weather bureau, the tourism board and a dozen other bodies, including those responsible for testing the surveillance technology, had all installed their own devices.

Although after pictures of the cluster of cameras began to go viral the local government removed them

Still, it's so impossibly great that someone thought this was a good idea at one point.
