Utusan Asks Why Develop A Chinese Community In Bukit Bintang?
DBKL will develop Jalan Alor in Bukit Bintang to upgrade it into a community food hub, but there are differing views on the need, or rather the lack of reasons, to develop this area.
DBKL is planning a RM12 million upgrade to turn Jalan Alor into a food hub
Last month, KL Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib announced a project to upgrade Jalan Alor into a “food paradise of international standards”.
yahoo.comThe project to upgrade Jalan Alor to become the global “Food Paradise” is scheduled to begin in October and is expected to be completed 11 months later.
yahoo.comThe project is estimated to cost RM12mil and is one of the three upgrading projects undertaken by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
The other two involve Jalan Kenanga and Chow Kit areas.

Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia has demanded to know why there is a need for a Chinese “Food Paradise” in Kuala Lumpur, continuing its attack on the community following the May 5 general election.
malaysia-chronicle.comAwang Selamat, the pseudonym for the collective voice of the paper’s editors, warned DBKL to be mindful of who would benefit while noting that there is already a strong Chinese image in Bukit Bintang. “It already resembles Hong Kong,” Awang Selamat said.
msn.com“Awang is sad because the authorities should have started a Malay food hub first if they wanted to create such a concept in the capital. Keep in mind that Malaysia is multiracial but with Malays and Bumiputeras at its core. Like it or not, that is the reality.”
themalaymailonline.comThe paper pointed out that pouring RM12 million into a project which would benefit the Chinese community is an exercise in futility. From way before, the voters in the area have never supported the government; even if given the moon and the stars, there will be no appreciation,” it said.
malaysia-today.netBukit Bintang MP Fong Kui says Utusan is childish, Jalan Alor is about the tourists, not the Chinese community
Opposition lawmakers today reminded Utusan Malaysia that Bukit Bintang is a tourist magnet and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall is justified in spending RM12 million on the area to develop a Chinese food hub in Jalan Alor.
themalaysianinsider.com“It has a whole range of hotels from budget to five-star. It simply is a case of City Hall helping the government to promote tourism in the country,” he told The Malaysian Insider, while pointing out that the area had some 133 hotels.
yahoo.com"It is childish to politicise the food hub project in Bukit Bintang. The writer has failed to recognise that the district is already a multinational food paradise."
msn.com"It is not about helping the Chinese community in the area, it is about tourists who frequent the area," he said. “It is wrong to say it will benefit only the Chinese”.
themalaysianinsider.comNurul Izzah says the development of different cultures is what makes Malaysia special
Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar said City Hall's development of Jalan Alor is in line with the development in various parts of the city.
msn.comIt reflects the multicultural community we have in the city. This is what makes us special". She said Utusan's stand was curious as City Hall had before worked together with MRCB to upgrade the Little India in Brickfields to promote it as an Indian cultural hub.
yahoo.comFederal Territories Minister says the Jalan Alor development plan will go on
Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) project to turn Jalan Alor in the city centre into a food haven will go on despite Utusan Malaysia’s criticism, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said today.
themalaymailonline.comHe said the project, which aims to promote Jalan Alor as a street food haven in KL’s Golden Triangle to tourists, should be viewed in a “positive light”.
“We’ll go ahead with it”.
