Lee Kun was walking to her car near Sri Manja Court around 8pm on Thursday when a speeding motorcycle went past her and she fell heavily onto the road. She suffered severe head trauma and her handbag strap was ripped.

27-year-old Go Lee Kun was supposed to be her sisters maid honor in her sister’s wedding in December. She fell heavily onto the road, leaving her with severe head trauma before slipping into a coma.

“She was supposed to be my maid of honour. We were a happy family. Lee Kun was always cheerful and kind to everyone. We never thought that something like this could happen to us,” said the sister.

The victim's father says her daughter's death should be a reminder for the police to do more about street crime

Lee Kun’s father, 65-year-old Go Hong Chin, urged police and the Government to take serious measures to curb street crimes, especially snatch thefts, which had become rampant and posed a menace to women.

Hong Chin, who owns a consultancy firm, said the authorities should do more, as despite their reports of a reduction in crime nationwide, there news about street crime was rampant.

Petaling Jaya OCPD says Lee Kun's tragedy does not mean that Sri Manja area is not safe

However, in response, Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed reminded the people not to generalise incidents of crime.

“The tragedy that befell Lee Kun is an isolated incident,” he said. “It does not mean that the Sri Manja area is not safe.”

ACP Arjunaidi said, instead of criticising the police, Hong Chin and the public should come forward to assist the police in investigations.

“We welcome any witness to provide us with details,” he said.

However, residents say they do not feel safe in the area as there are not enough effort to stop street criminals

Petaling Jaya MP Hee Loy Sian said the incident was “only one of many which plagued residents in the area”. “Too little is being done to stop these criminals from preying on the honest, hard-working people here”.

A resident, who only wished to be known as Sally, 50, said they lived in fear everyday. “Every time we walk out the door, we know we are being watched and can be targeted by criminals,” she said.
