QL Resources Bhd’s wholly-owned unit, Maxincome Resources Sdn Bhd, has signed a franchise agreement with Tokyo-based FamilyMart Co Ltd for the development and operation of FamilyMart convenience stores in Malaysia.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia yesterday, 11 April, QL Resources said the expansion into the convenience store chain business with the established FamilyMart brand will open up bigger growth opportunities.

QL is expecting to open the first FamilyMart in Kuala Lumpur by December 2016

The Edge reported that the company plans to open 300 outlets within five years.

As of 31 March 2016, the company is ranked as the second-largest convenience store chain in the world, with 17,540 stores in seven countries worldwide.

“FamilyMart, known for its wide range of quality, ready-to-eat food and beverage offerings besides other convenience items, provides a strategic downstream expansion of QL’s existing food manufacturing and distribution business,” the company said.

It’s easy to see why FamilyMart is highly regarded in countries like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan as it offers a wide range of goods selection for basic grocery items, drinks, and food on-the-go such as onigiri (rice balls), bento (packed rice) and even pasta.

Besides the usual routines of selling food and beverage, FamilyMart outlets usually offer a wide range of services including paying utility bills, buying movie tickets, using the ATM, even getting blood pressure measured and much more.

Best of all, like most convenience stores, they open 24 hours a day, seven days a week!
