The Penang government will accord the late DAP leader Karpal Singh a state-level funeral on Sunday, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng. He said it had also instructed that the state flag be flown at half-mast from today until the funeral on Sunday.

Sources also revealed that Karpal’s vehicle had about 15 outstanding summonses for speeding. The source revealed that the Toyota Alphard accumulated a total of 29 traffic summonses, of which 15 had not been settled.

But the same authorities did not disclose, however, the nature of the traffic offences that caused the issuance of the summonses.

Initial urine sample of the lorry driver, 45, involved in the accident that killed Karpal Singh has tested positive for ganja.

Perak police chief SDCP Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the results are not conclusive because it was only an initial screening done by the police on the 45-year old man.

“If the first screening comes back as positive, then the second sample will be sent to the pathologist for verification. “The second sample has been sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for verification,” he said. "The lorry driver's statements have been taken and he has been released," he added.

When asked on the details of the accident, SDCP Acryl Sani said it was being investigated. "We need to get all statements involved to check on the evidence to conclude what had happened," he said. SDCP Acryl said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Bukit Gelugor MP and veteran DAP leader Karpal Singh was killed when the car he was travelling in collided with a five-tonne lorry near Gua Tempurung on the North South Expressway here early Thursday.

Michael Cornelius, the loyal assistant who has been attending to Karpal's needs since he was wheelchair bound in a 2005 accident was also killed. He was 39 years old.

The impact of the crash at about 1am killed the prominent lawyer and his assistant, C Michael, on the spot.

Karpal's son, Ramkarpal, and the car's driver, C Selvam, were injured. Karpal's Indonesian domestic helper was also injured and is in critical condition.

According to a police statement later, Ram and driver of the ill-fated car, C Selvam, were not injured. However, Karpal's Indonesian maid suffered severe injuries and she is warded at Ipoh's Hospital Permaisuri Bainun.

Contacted later, an Ipoh police spokesperson told Malaysiakini that it is believed the MPV collided with a lorry which switched lanes without indication.

The driver of the lorry, which was hit behind by Karpal's car, and its three passengers escaped without injury.

The driver and co-driver of the lorry are being questioned by police.
