A knifeman stabbed three children and a teacher to death and wounded five more pupils before killing himself in a rampage at a primary school in Hubei province yesterday, the latest deadly attack in the country against schoolchildren. The attacker killed himself by jumping from a building following the carnage at a school at Shiyan, Xinhua and other media outlets reported.

The female teacher who was stabbed in her chest and stomach, died of her injuries hours later. The wounded pupils, two of whom were severely injured, were being treated at a local hospital.

Wielding a knife, the man stabbed eight students and a teacher before he took his own life, the report said. Three of the students died, and the six other victims have been hospitalized, Xinhua reported. Two of the students are seriously hurt, it said.

The 43 year-old Chen Yanfu was the father of a student that attended Dongfang Elementary School in Yunxi County, Shiyan City, of Hubei. Monday was the first day of school this year.

Fu Qingyu, the school's headmaster, said Chen did not say a word after entering classrooms, just pulled out a knife and started stabbing anyone within reach.

A teacher in the classroom was stabbed in the chest while trying to stop the man from killing students, according to a teacher at the school speaking to the Chinese press. Two teachers burst into the classroom after hearing the screams and forced the assailant into the stairwell. When he realized the police were coming, Chen ran to the top of the five story building and jumped to his death.

Chen carried out the attack because the school refused to register his daughter for the new school year because she had failed to complete her homework, police said. Yesterday was the first day of the new school year in many parts of the country.

Xinhua said Chen had apparently been able to enter the school unquestioned, with no security checks on visitors in place that day. While Xinhua said it was not immediately known how Chen entered the campus, state broadcaster China Central Television said Chen was allowed into the school after he said he went to register his daughter.
