Two suspected Gang 36 members were shot dead in a shootout with police at a junction between near the Tesco Hypermarket Cheng 1 at Taman Paya Rumput Utama here today.

There were no casualties among the policemen who were involved in a special crime prevention operation dubbed Ops Cantas to track down crime suspects.

The shootout started when the two men in a Perodua MyVi fired five shots at policemen who requested them to stop

In the 9.20am incident, police units spotted the two wanted men in a silver Perodua Myvi before approaching the car in an attempt to arrest the suspects.

However, according to a police source, one of the suspects opened fire at the police officers as they advanced to the suspect’s car.

“My team tried to stop them, I introduced myself as a police officer and I was wearing a police jacket. As I got near to the car, I heard gun shots and I saw one of the men had a gun on his hand.” “We exchanged fire and the two men died on the spot,” the source said.

Police found two pistols, cannabis and police badges from the victims' car

Khalid said the police recovered two automatic pistols, cannabis and police badges on the bodies and the car.

One pistol was found near the feet of the passenger while the other was found behind the driver.

Initial investigation showed that one of the men was using a fake identification card and had 10 criminal records, including twice being detained under the Emergency Ordinance, while the other suspect had one record under the Dangerous Drugs Act.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said 35 police officers were involved in the shootout, the police car was hit

“Thirty-five police officers and men from Bukit Aman and Malacca were involved in the shootout which lasted between five and 10 minutes. The suspects were believed to have fired five shots at the police, including a few shots which hit a police car,” he told a news conference in Malacca today.

"They are believed to be involved in at least seven murder cases and an attempted murder in Malacca, Johor, Negri Sembilan, Kedah and Penang in the last two years and are suspects in two robberies in Duyong, Malacca and Senawang, Negri Sembilan," he said.

Both of the victims had previous criminal records

“The first suspect, D Selvam or Raja Cella from Johor Bahru have committed various crimes in Negeri Sembilan, Kedah and Terengganu. Twice arrested under EO. He is also believed to have used an ID which belonged to someone else.”

“The other guy, K Sivanesan from Negeri Sembilan is only 25-years-old, with one criminal record of drug abuse,” the source added.
