A proposed multi-million ringgit mixed development project has left Kuala Terengganu's 100-year-old Pasar Payang market in danger of being demolished, said PAS Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad.

He added that last year, Ahmad announced plans to construct a 23-storey five-star hotel and a 30-storey apartment building at the Pasar Payang site.

He said the traders did not know if they will be relocated to another site.
"The traders in Pasar Payang are poor bumiputeras who have been there for three to four generations.
"I asked the Tourism Minister to help, like how he helped with the Jonker Walk issue. He appeared to be sympathetic," Raja Kamarul Bahrin said.

The MP added that it looked as though the current state government wanted to punish the people who voted for the opposition. He said in Kuala Terengganu it was a clean sweep with Pakatan Rakyat winning all four state seats and one parliament seat.
"In 2007, the Tourism Ministry actually had allocations and prepared drawings to renovate, refurbish and save Pasar Payang.
"However, in 2008 when Datuk Seri Ahmad Said took over from Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh as menteri besar, the project was cancelled," Raja Kamarul told a press conference at Parliament lobby..
