Three Sukma handball players have been charged separately in three Sessions Courts with raping a 20-year-old chaperone.

Megat Farzeril Faiz Megat Razali, Mohammad Shaizzad Md Shafie, both 19, and Adib Adha Ismail, 18, were charged in separate courts yesterday with raping the 20-year-old woman on July 4.

Megat Farzeril was charged with raping the woman at about 4am, Mohammad Shaizzad at about 4.05am and Adib at about 4.10am in a room in Enggang Block at Second College, Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang on July 4.

They pleaded not guilty to the charge of raping the 20-year-old woman in a room at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang between 4 am and 4.10 am on July 4.

The three courts allowed the athletes to be released on RM10,000 bail each in one surety. Adib Adha and Mohammad Shaizzad, however, are required to report to a police station once a month, Bernama reported.

Three Sukma athletes are expected to be charged in a Sessions Court here today with the alleged rape of a 19-year-old chaperone for the Federal Territory handball team.

Serdang police deputy chief Superintendent Lam Chien Fei said the athletes would be brought to the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court to face charges under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is determined to see tighter security protocol in place for future Malaysia Games (Sukma), following an alleged rape and alcohol drinking case in the just concluded Games.

“I take the rape allegation extremely seriously and I take the safety of athletes very seriously, especially our female athletes. We'll be in discussions with state sports councils & hope to present the revised security protocol before the next Sukma in Perlis."

“I am also very disappointed with the breach of security that enabled alcohol to be brought into the sports village. I've asked the National Sports Council to file a report but if I find the report unsatisfactory, I may ask my secretary-general to look into it as a third party."

New revelations have unfol­ded in the alleged rape at the recently concluded Sukma – the girl has been revealed to be a chaperone for the Federal Territories women’s handball team.

The girl, who was a communications liaison to the girls’ team, was in charge of informing the athletes who were housed in a dorm in Second College in UPM on team instructions as the team’s head coach was male and thus, not allowed to enter the dorm.

The source, however, claimed that security was not tight, adding that those in charge did not bother to inspect vehicles entering the Games Village. He said there was also no security personnel stationed at the dorm’s entrances.

Serdang deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent of Police Lam Chien Fei said the investigation was almost complete, and the investigation papers would be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor's office soon.

Meanwhile, a coach with the Federal Territories handball team said it was unfair to suspend all the coaches and athletes, adding that a thorough investigation should be carried out first.

Police have arrested three players of the Federal Territory handball team for allegedly gang raping a 19-year-old girl at the recent Malaysia Games (Sukma).

Serdang deputy OCPD Supt Lam Chin Fei said the three boys have been remanded till July 11 to facilitate investigations. “They could face a maximum 20-year jail term and whipping if convicted,” he said.

The three athletes and the 19-year-old victim, who are members of the Sukma handball team, had apparently organised a party held within the hostel prior to the attack.

Sources revealed that the victim was the only girl among some 20 athletes who attended the gathering where alcoholic drinks were allegedly consumed.

An unregistered female official with the Federal Territory (FT) handball team has alleged that she was raped by three of the team’s players on Wednesday at the Sukma Games Village at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang, Selangor.

The girl claimed to have gone out for drinks with several of her teammates the night the alleged rape took place. The next thing she realised was that she was naked and pinned down by a man at around 4am.

She claimed that she was in a semiconscious state when the three teenagers took turns to rape her.

It is learnt that hours into the party, the victim became drowsy and was helped to her room by the three detained athletes before the alleged sexual assault took place.

The National Sports Council will leave the investigation into the alleged rape reported during the ongoing Sukma Games to the police.

Zolkples said security guards on duty monitored the area in the sports village but did not check every room.

"We have almost 4,000 athletes staying at the sports village, it's difficult to check each room. We also separate the blocks, according to gender, for safety purposes," he said.
