“Being crushed by a cow is the last way you expect to leave this Earth,” de Souza’s brother-in-law told the newspaper. “In my view it wasn’t the cow that killed our Joao, it was the unacceptable time he spent waiting to be examined.”

The victim’s mother was shocked at how inexplicably her son died. “I didn’t bring my son up to be killed by a falling cow,” she told SuperCanal. “He nearly died when he was 2 and got meningitis, but I worked hard to buy medicines for him and he survived.”

The owner of the cow could be charged with involuntary manslaughter. But that’s little comfort for de Souza’s distraught mom. “There’s no justice in the world,” she said.
