  • This August will see 11 members of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) converge in Kuala Lumpur for the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games

    • The 29th SEA Games, previously known as SEAP (South East Asian Peninsular) Games, is branded as "Kuala Lumpur 2017" (KL 2017) and will be the sixth time Malaysia has played host to the prestigious sporting event after last hosting it in 2001.

There will be 4,888 athletes from 11 countries competing against each other in 39 sports categories and 404 events from 19 to 30 August 2017.

  • Tickets for selected events went on sale last month, with prices between RM10 and RM20

    • Tickets are required for entry at 19 events, including the opening and closing ceremony.

A quick check on the website shows that tickets for swimming, netball, pencak silat, basketball, and taekwondo have sold out.

  • Fret not if you've missed out on some of the ticketed events because there's plenty of free sporting events to check out

    • 32 sporting events at the 29th SEA Games are actually free!

  • Not sure which ones to go for? Here are some suggestions:

  • Athletics

    • The athletics event promises to be an exciting affair. Team Malaysia looks to set new records and finish at the top of the table. But with other athletics powerhouses like Team Singapore and Team Thailand looking to pull a few upsets, this will arguably be one of the more popular events.

Athletics will be held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium from 19 to 26 August 2017.

  • Squash

    • 15-year-old Aifa Azman will be making her first SEA Games appearance and she has eyes on the gold medal.

Squash will be held at the Pusat Skuasy Kebangsaan in Bukit Jalil from 21 to 29 August 2017.

  • Ice Hockey

    • Despite being in a tropical climate, ice hockey has become increasingly popular in the SEA region in recent times. The sport was established in Malaysia in 2006 and the local boys have managed to claim impressive results in several tournaments and games in Asia.

Ice Hockey will be held at Empire City Ice Arena, Damansara Perdana from 20 to 24 August 2017.

  • Other free events include judo, sailing, volleyball, triathlon, wushu, weightlifting, and many more
