Rio Olympic Games silver medallists Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong are now ranked at the top spot globally!
At the Rio Olympics, V Shem-Wee Kiong became the first Malaysian pair to make it to the Olympics final since Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock won silver in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
The pair came close to winning gold, but fell short to China's Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan in the final.
Badminton World Federation (BWF) in its latest world ranking list stated that V Shem-Wee Kiong had accumulated 71,297 points - making them the world number one men’s doubles pair
The duo moved up in the ranks when popular Korean pair Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yeon Seong were removed from the list. Yong Dae announced that he would retire from professional badminton after the Rio Olympics.
China’s Chai Biao-Hong Wei came in second place with 70,220 and Danish pair of Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen (67,534) in third.
The duo couldn't be happier to end the year on a high note
"I am extremely happy because I only got to know about this when I checked the list this morning. We were hoping to end the year on a high, but I did not expect it to happen this soon, especially since we still have the China and Hong Kong Opens to play in," V Shem said as quoted by the New Strait Times.
After winning the silver medal at the Rio Olympics, V Shem-Wee Kiong clinched the Denmark Open title on October
The Malaysian shuttlers will be competing in the China Open next Tuesday, 15 November before flying over to Kowloon for the Hong Kong Open on 22 November.
