Besides The Size, What's Really Different Between The iPhone 6 And iPhone 6 Plus?

The 9 September launch has come and gone and as expected Apple announced two new iPhones: the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Also, as expected they come in two new, much larger sizes: 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches. But their differences are far more than skin deep. Here's breaking them down.

1. While the new iPhones are larger than iPhone 5S, the iPhone 6 screen is smaller than the iPhone 6 Plus

The phone comes in two models, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. The original iPhone in 2007 had a screen that was 3.5 inches, measured diagonally. The larger size means more pixels for apps to work with. The iPhone 5 line had a 640 by 1136 screen resolution. The new phones boost that to 750 by 1334 and 1080 by 1920, respectively.

2. iPhone 6 has a fairly low battery life than iPhone 6 Plus. By contrast, the 6 Plus uses its extra size well to push iPhone battery life to a whole new level.

The 6 Plus uses its extra size well to push iPhone battery life to a whole new level. The big winners are audio (doubling to 80 hours), video (a 40% boost to 14 hours) 3G talk time (from 10 to 24 hours), 3G browsing (8 to 12 hours) and standby (up to 16 days). Arguably the most pertinent ratings – WiFi browsing and LTE browsing – only increase 20 per cent to 12 hours, but it remains the biggest generational leap in iPhone history.

3. On camera front, while both the new iPhones uses same resolution, iPhone 6 Plus comes out ahead in terms of Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS)

The iPhone 6 (and 6 Plus) sports a new sensor that allows the camera auto-focus twice as fast as previous iPhones. The new iPhones also support a new slow-motion video feature and "burst selfies." The iPhone 6 Plus — but not the regular iPhone 6 — offers optical image stabilization. Sometimes, users can slightly shake the camera at the instant they take the picture, leading to blurriness. Optical image stabilization automatically detects and offsets these movements, helping to produce a crystal-clear image.

4. At .28 inches thick, iPhone 6 Plus is just a hair thicker than the .27-inch iPhone 6. The slightly heftier 6 Plus weighs in at 6.07 ounces while the iPhone 6 is 4.55 ounces.

The iPhone 6 measures 5.44 x 2.64 x 0.27 inches (138.1 x 67 x 6.9mm) and weighs 4.55 ounces (129g) – a weight increase that is roughly proportional to its 16% volume increase compared to the iPhone 5S. Meanwhile the iPhone 6 Plus clearly has the 5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in its sights. The Plus measures 6.22 x 3.06 x 0.28 inches (158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1mm) and weighs 6.07 ounces (172g).

5. One of the most subtle difference is that the interface of iPhone 6 Plus, when flipped sideways, switches to landscape mode, even when you're on the homescreen

The 6 Plus also offers a useful new landscape view in most apps in exchange for the bigger size – you get an inbox while looking at Messages or Mail, for instance, and detailed views in most system software. It’s a big advantage for working through stuff quickly, and is comparable to what the iPad offers in many ways.

If you want the larger size of the iPhone 6 Plus, you'll have to pay $100 extra: it's $299 for a 16 GB model, going up to $499 for the 128 GB model. As per its usual practice, Apple is going to continue selling old models at a reduce price. The iPhone 5S will sell for $99, while an iPhone 5C will be free with contract.
