For the past several years, Android purists have looked forward to the launch of a new Nexus smartphone, knowing that the devices will run a completely vanilla version of Google’s mobile OS and receive updates before most other devices. It looks like those folks may not have a Nexus phone to look forward to this year, though, as a new rumor claims that "there is no Nexus 6."

To Be Fair, This Particular Rumour Has Been Making Its Way Around The Mill For Months Now, But Evleaks’ Latest Tweets Lend Further Credence To It

The newest rumor surrounding the Nexus (more specifically the Nexus 6) comes from evleaks stating that “there is no Nexus 6, farewell Nexus.” Now there is no image to go along with that and no other information whatsoever, it’s just that one simple statement.

Evleaks is generally known for putting out solid information when it comes to leaks, but with nothing else to go off of other than this at the moment we have to take this with a heavy grain of salt and suggest you do the same. That doesn’t mean rule out that possibility though. Although that first statement is rather bare, evleaks has followed up the tweet suggesting that the Nexus 6 is no more, with a new tweet stating that we shouldn’t worry because there is a silver lining to this cloud.

Is he suggesting that Android Silver is indeed going to be the device taking its place? That what it seems like, but once again we still have no details so this is better left as something to chew on and speculate about for the time being. If there is any truth to all of this we might hear about it from Google officially at Google I/O next month, or perhaps they’ll lift the curtain before then.

For Those Unfamiliar With The Android Silver Program, It’s Basically Google’s Way To Put An End To Android Fragmentation, Or Curb The Majority Of It

This will be done by encouraging OEMs to create devices with as little non-Google apps as possible, thus creating a more-or-less stock experience. Devices that have been Silver Certified will receive updates promptly, much like Nexus devices.

The program will also only allow five high-end models at a time, which we guess is pretty good since that means users will have more options to choose from, versus the Nexus handset which only has one model to choose from every year.

Although The Evleaks Tweets Doesn't Really Offer Up Any New Information, Given His Credibility, It Would Be Wise To Pay Close Attention

Of course, none of this has been made official. So, sure, it could change in the next few weeks or months. But our inclination is that Google will fully unveil its Android Silver program in June.
