A 15-year-old male student accused of murdering his senior female schoolmate at SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4) in October last year pleaded not guilty at the High Court yesterday, 12 February
The teenager, who cannot be publicly named due to his age, entered his plea after the murder charge was read in Mandarin before High Court judge Adlin Abdul Majid.
Proceedings, which lasted over an hour, were held behind closed doors with only the accused's parents present, as the case involves a juvenile, reported the New Straits Times.
According to the charge sheet, the boy is accused of fatally stabbing his schoolmate, Yap Shing Xuen, in the girls' toilet of SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4) in Bandar Utama between 9.20am and 9.35am on 14 October 2025.
The offence carries the death penalty, or 30 to 40 years' imprisonment, along with up to 12 strokes of the rotan if the death sentence is not imposed.

Speaking outside the court, the teenager's lawyer Kitson Foong said the teen understood the charge and chose to have the case tried
"The boy was asked by the court whether he pleaded not guilty or not. He stood outside the dock and appeared calm. He went to the microphone and told the court that he wanted to go on trial," Foong was quoted as saying.
He added that the trial is expected to last about two weeks in July, with specific dates to be fixed during the next case management session on 6 March.
Deputy public prosecutors Aqharie Durranie Aziz and Zamariah Zarifah Aris appeared for the prosecution. Pending trial, the accused remains at the Puncak Alam Correctional Centre, a juvenile detention facility.
A lawyer acting on a watching brief for the victim's family was barred from the proceedings
The High Court barred lawyer Nur Izni Syazwani Ahmad, who was acting on a watching brief for the victim's family, from being present during the proceedings.
However, two other lawyers, Datuk Yasmeen Shariff and Jason Lim Jie Sheng, representing the Malaysian Bar and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM), were allowed to observe the proceedings in chambers.
According to the defence lawyer, Nur Izni was barred as "there is a high possibility that the victim's family members will be called as witnesses".
"The court ruled that only necessary persons who are relevant and helpful are allowed inside, in the interest of the boy's rights under the Child Act," he added.
