A 27-year-old man who planned to get married by the end of this year has died after spending nearly two weeks in a coma following a crash involving a driver allegedly under the influence of alcohol

Zulfiqar Zamir Amirul Nizam died at about 4.28pm on Monday, 25 May, at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) in Klang after battling critical injuries for 13 days.

He worked part-time as a delivery rider and had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since 13 May, when a vehicle travelling against traffic crashed into his motorcycle along Persiaran Kota.

Speaking to reporters outside the hospital's forensic department, Zulfiqar's mother, Hamidah Othman, said doctors informed the family earlier yesterday morning that his condition had worsened.

"The hospital later informed us that Zulfiqar was in a very critical condition and fully dependent on a ventilator before his pulse started to weaken," she was quoted as saying by Bernama.

According to the mother, Zulfiqar never regained consciousness after the crash

"Doctors had already said his chances were very slim, but as a mother, I kept hoping for a miracle," she said.

She described Zulfiqar as the backbone of the family, saying he had long supported his parents and younger siblings financially.

"He still had many unfulfilled dreams — he wanted to start his own business, complete his degree and get married — but everything has now been cut short," she added.

The family is now calling for stricter action against drunk driving offences and wants the driver involved to face heavier punishment following Zulfiqar's death

"My son did not suffer a minor injury; he died because of irresponsible actions. I want the drunk driver to be held accountable," Hamidah told the New Straits Times.

Meanwhile, Zulfiqar's father, Amirul Nizam Abdul Aziz, said the family had already initiated civil legal action against the driver through their lawyer.

"We sincerely hope that the charge in relation to this incident will be reviewed and amended following Zulfiqar Zamir's death to carry a heavier punishment," he said.

He added that the family had contacted the investigating officer to inform police of Zulfiqar's death so the investigation could be updated accordingly.

On 18 May, a 35-year-old part-time event planning assistant, identified as Low Kean Peng, pleaded not guilty at the Klang Magistrate's Court to driving under the influence of alcohol and causing serious injury to Zulfiqar.

He was accused of driving with 196mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood sample, exceeding the legal limit of 146mg.

Investigations previously found the accused had allegedly driven about 3.5km against traffic from Port Klang towards Shah Alam before crashing into Zulfiqar's motorcycle at around 12.35am on 13 May.
