A motorist captured in a viral video driving against traffic on Jalan Klang Lama was arrested and will be charged in court today
The Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department confirmed that the suspect is scheduled to be charged at the Jalan Duta Court Complex at 9am on 6 April, as reported by Bernama.
This follows a police investigation by local authorities after the dangerous stunt was captured on camera and widely shared on social media, drawing sharp criticism from the public, according to the New Straits Times.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the suspect surrendered at 8.35pm yesterday, 5 April, and was immediately detained.
Police had attempted to locate the suspect at several addresses, including his family home, before he eventually turned himself in.
The driver surrendered as police ramped up their search after the video of the incident went viral.
The incident happened at around 9.44am yesterday along a busy stretch of Jalan Klang Lama
The suspect reportedly drove against traffic for about 500 metres between the Jalan Sepadu and Jalan Kuchai Lama intersections.
Despite the high risk of a head-on collision in the high-traffic zone, no injuries were reported.
The suspect underwent medical screenings to determine his mental and physical state during the incident
ACP Mohd Zamzuri confirmed the suspect tested negative for alcohol and drugs.
The driver claimed he did not do it intentionally and had accidentally taken the wrong route to Mid Valley.
Police are investigating the case under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving
If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000.
First-time offenders will also have their driving licence suspended for at least five years.
