A 26-year-old man who worked part-time as a delivery rider to save money for his wedding is now fighting for his life after a suspected drunk-driving crash in Klang

According to the victim's mother, Hamidah Othman, her son, Zulfiqar Zamir Amirul Nizam, was riding his motorcycle when a car allegedly travelling against traffic crashed into him.

"My son was on the correct side of the road. He did nothing wrong. I want justice for my son," she said as quoted by the New Straits Times.

"In fact, justice should not just be for him, but for everyone. I do not want this to happen to anyone else."

The incident reportedly occurred at around 12.30am on 13 May along Persiaran Kota in Klang.

South Klang district police chief ACP Lim Jit Huey said the driver had allegedly travelled about 3.5km against the flow of traffic while intoxicated before crashing into Zulfiqar's motorcycle.

Police also alleged that the suspected drunk driver had been speeding at the time of the crash

Zulfiqar suffered a fractured arm and a broken back in the collision.

He has since undergone surgery and remains in critical condition at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital's intensive care unit (ICU).

Hamidah said her son worked as a service adviser full-time and only took up food and parcel delivery jobs during his spare time to earn extra money ahead of his wedding.

She said Zulfiqar planned to hold his wedding reception in Pasir Gudang this December.

"That night, he was trying to complete his final delivery to Bandar Puteri, Puchong, before heading home," she said.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man has been charged in connection with the crash

According to FMT, Low Kean Peng claimed trial at the Klang Magistrates' Court today, 18 May, to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing grievous injury.

The part-time event planner was allegedly found to have 196mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, nearly four times the legal limit of 50mg.

He was charged under Section 44(1A) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail sentence of between seven and 10 years, as well as a fine ranging from RM30,000 to RM50,000 upon conviction.

Magistrate A Karthiyayini allowed bail at RM10,000 with one surety and ordered Low to report to a police station twice a month

The court also suspended his driving licence pending disposal of the case and fixed 30 July for mention.

During mitigation, defence counsel Ethan Tan reportedly asked for lower bail, telling the court that Low earns around RM2,000 monthly and supports his elderly parents, including a mother with diabetes and a father undergoing cancer treatment.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Syuhada Rosli had earlier requested RM15,000 bail, citing the seriousness of the offence.
