Got A Curious Mind? We Suspect You'll Love At Least One Of These 9 Local Plays

Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be overly "cultured" to appreciate a bit of good ol' theatre.

1. The Animals Rhapsody @ klpac (17 & 18 January)

A delightful children's theatre incorporating paper cuttings, puppets and everyday objects, 'The Animals Rhapsody' is a story about a rabbit who dreamed of travelling around the world in a plastic bag.

'The Animals Rhapsody' is presented by Good News Artspace and a collaboration between director Lee Anthony and paper cut artist Soo Chee Han.

2. The Mahabharata Chapter Two @ DPAC (17 & 18 January)

Japanese director and choreographer Hiroshi Koike combines the essence of Asian body culture and Balinese mask theatre in the second instalment of the Mahabharata project. Adapted from one section of the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata, 'The Mahabharata Chapter Two' continues from the conflict between the Kulu and Pandu families, resulting in a long and terrible war over their territories.

The show will be performed by an 18-member team of artistes from Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and India.

3. Opera Puteri Saadong @ klpac (23 to 25 January)

Dubbed the world's first groundbreaking Malay contemporary opera, 'Opera Puteri Saadong' combines the traditional art of Mak Yong and Gamelan with western choir and orchestra ensembles using modern compositional methods and computer-generated multimedia. Based on the legend of Puteri Saadong from Kelantan, the drama unfolds from her marriage to Raja Abdullah to her capture in the hands of the King of Siam, Raja Narai until her release and return.

4. Zak Zebra’s African Safari @ klpac (3 to 8 February)

One for the kids and the young at heart, 'Zak Zebra's African Safari' tells the vibrant and exciting story of a plucky band of young animals embarking on a daring adventure to defeat a Big Game Hunter whose sinister plans threaten their home, the Serengeti. By facing their fears and working together, only they can restore freedom for the animals of the African Savannah.

Created by Nick Choo and Jenny de Rueck from Australia, the musical extravaganza played to full houses and critical acclaim in the Land Down Under.

5. Cakap Dapur: R & D Stories @ DPAC (5 to 8 February)

Directed and performed by Chee Sek Thim, the staging takes the audience through a series of text modules touching history, culture and identity using a classroom lecture as its format. The play is about being completely stripped, about giving out signs and yet knowing that not everyone will understand these signs, about performing and yet not performing. He will tell stories of squatters in Kampung Medan in the '60s, May '69, Merdeka and Reviving Zapin.

This play was developed by Leow Puay Tin using material from a workshop on research and documentation for artists conducted by Professor Dr Mohd Anis Md Nor.

6. Aesop’s Fables @ PJ Live Arts (10 to 15 February)

This fun-filled musical extravaganza for children and families features some old favourites as well as rarer gems, including Jay And The Peacock, Androcles And The Lion, as well as The Goose Who Laid Golden Eggs. Catch this visually-engaging and entertaining production from across the Causeway and you’ll be sure to be tickled, teased and turned around by this amusing collection of fabulous fables!

Awkward one night stands, sneaky quickies, and hilarious bedroom conversations ensue when we delve into the lives of couples and the people around them. Explore relationship stereotypes and witness squeamish pillow talks in this two hour comic fiesta which is bound to have you doubled up in laughter!

Contains mature themes, only for audiences 18 years old and above.

8. Super Ptui! & Transit Kaler Magenta @ PJ Live Arts (27 February to 1 March)

When Ptuih! goes against his father, he is chased out of the house. Ptuih!’s older brother Helium Si Gadis Nadir and sister Maseh Dara try to persuade him to return home but the situation gets complicated with everyone’s overlapping agendas for wanting to bring him home.

Performed in Malay without subtitles. May contain mature themes.
