Disney has dropped the first teaser trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon, an animated fantasy film slated for a March 2021 release

The movie is set in the fictional world of Kumandra. It features the titular warrior Raya (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) who embarks on a mission to search for the last dragon, Sisu (voiced by Awkwafina).

The movie was written by Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians) and Qui Nguyen (The Society).

According to IGN, the production team went to Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia to take inspiration from "the beautiful and diverse cultures of Southeast Asia".

Since the release of its first trailer, netizens were quick to point out the Southeast Asian influences scattered throughout the movie

Many were happy with the depictions. Plus, they also tried to decipher and match the tribes in the film to their real-life counterparts.

In the trailer, a young Raya is wielding what seems to be a pair of Arnis sticks, a traditional Filipino weapon

Arnis, also known as Kali or Eskrima, was declared as the Philippines' national martial art and sport by the government in 2009.

Some also pointed out that young Raya looks like Korra from the Avatar series

However, some Twitter users are not happy with Disney's handling of Southeast Asian representation as they seem to be too broad
