"Barbenheimer 2" — 'Saw X' & 'PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie' Set To Release On The Same Day
Which movie will you be seeing first?
Following the craze over blockbuster films Barbie (2023) and Oppenheimer (2023), both of which attained massive buzz for being released in cinemas the same date, it seems as though another pair of films may be doing just the same thing
Garnering massive social media attention for the decision, fantasy-comedy film Barbie (2023) and biographical thriller Oppenheimer (2023) made headlines over the past few months after both films were set to release on 21 July 2023.
Ultimately, both films garnered major success in cinemas, with Barbie (2023) having already passed the USD400 million mark (approximately RM1.81 billion) internationally, while Oppenheimer (2023) pulled in USD238 million (approximately RM1.08 billion) on the same metric, as stated in a report by Variety.
After the success of these practically polar opposite films, it seems as though a couple of other movies are set to battle it out at the box office very soon.
According to descriptions of both films, the 10th instalment of the Saw franchise, Saw X (2023), and the sequel to the PAW Patrol franchise, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023), are set to release on 29 September later this year
In an astounding event, the simultaneous release of both films have come to be referred to as Barbenheimer 2, a sequel to the Internet phenomenon that erupted after Barbie (2023) and Oppenheimer (2023) were announced to be released on the same day.
Comic Book Resources stated that Saw X (2023) was initially supposed to be released on 27 October, with rumours speculating that the movie was moved forward by a month due to the film's distribution studio, Lionsgate, hoping to see it earn more money in October.
In a funny twist, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023) was initially slated to be released on 13 October when the project was announced in 2021, but was coincidentally pushed forward as well, due to undisclosed reasons, according to Deadline.
Saw X (2023) is said to bring back the initial stars of the franchise, Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith, to reprise their roles as Jigsaw and Amanda Young respectively. This film is set between the first and second Saw movies, and will be the first prequel for the franchise. It will also centre around Bell's character seeking out a miracle cure for cancer before things turn grim.
On the other side of the coin, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023) will see the PAW Patrol pups gain superpowers after a meteor strikes Adventure City. However, things take a turn when evil Mayor Humdinger partners with a mad scientist named Victoria Vance to steal their powers.
With hardly any doubt on the matter, both films are reminiscent of the same buzz surrounding Barbie (2023) and Oppenheimer (2023) — two different movies with wildly different genres being released on the same day.
Since the announcement, many members of the public took to X — formerly known as Twitter — to share their thoughts on the overlap
While some have referred to the situation as the sequel to Barbenheimer, others have gone out of their way to generate a new phrase for the overlap of these movies, calling it SawPatrol.
A few users also created their own memes of the two movies together.
However, one of the funniest tweets came from the official account of Paramount Pictures, one of the distribution companies that will be featuring PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023) internationally. In their tweet, the company seemed to hint at humouring the overlapped release dates too.
"Seven tickets to Saw Patrol, please," read the tweet.
All jokes aside, the unquestionable success of both Barbie (2023) and Oppenheimer (2023) see potential for Saw X (2023) and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023) to succeed at the box office too
