[VIDEO] It's So Awkward When Hipsters Say They Listen To Bands That Don't Exist...
This is what happens when two Singaporeans asked a bunch of concertgoers what they think about bands that are so obscure, they're not even real!
For some weird reason, music fans love knowing about bands they don't exist, even more so when one is a hipster
Hipsters are generally described as individuals who reject trends and attitudes perpetuated by the mainstream culture, like popular music.
So in terms of music knowledge - the more obscure a band is, the more "hipster cred" you have for knowing about them.
Just how far are hipsters (or wannabes) are willing to go when it comes to knowing about obscure bands? That's what Jonathan and Belicia sought to find out at the recent Laneway Festival in Singapore.
A video uploaded on YouTube on Feb. 2, 2015, shot by a duo, Jonathan and Belicia, at Laneway 2015 proves that hipsters will admit to anything just to look hip and cool, like listening to bands that don’t even exist.
mothership.sgFirst, a little context. Held in Singapore for the fifth time this year, St. Jerome's Laneway Festival has always played host to international and local indie musicians with an emphasis on fresh and new talents.
This year's line-up featured a number of artists we would probably not hear on mainstream radio or TV such as Angus & Julia Stone, Chet Faker, Courtney Barnett, FKA Twigs (side note: Robert Pattinson fans should know about her, at least), Lykke Li, St. Vincent and many others.
Inspired by Jimmy Kimmel's 'Lie Witness News' at Coachella 2013, Jonathan and Belicia took to the grounds of Laneway Festival to test concertgoers' knowledge about the indie bands they are looking forward to seeing
Here's where things got really interesting. The interviewers began asking people what they thought about a bunch of bands like Courtney Has Crabs, Phua Chu Kangs, Michelin and such. Future hipster bands, take note.
To be fair, these girls probably thought they were being asked if they know about the movie Forrest Gump rather than the non-existent "band"
We're also pretty sure this guy is in on the "White Floating Baby" joke.
Anyway, back to the video. For your sake, we hope you realised by now that the band names are entirely made up. But that didn't stop people from pretending they know AND have listened to these "bands"! #facepalm
Some even went as far as to describe the non-existent band's "sound" and going through their equally non-existent YouTube playlist.
We just about knocked our heads against our desks when they got around to giving out shout-outs. We're drowning in second-hand embarassment.
