A store sign in Japan featuring the face of a baby has captured attention for 'melting' in the heat, transforming into something resembling a demon-like figure

The store, Hangai Nagahama, located in Shiga Prefecture, originally had an innocent baby on the sign. However, over the past few years, the sign has changed dramatically, with the hot weather causing the ink on the baby's eyes and mouth to melt and distort.

Here's how the sign appeared back in 2020:

By 2023, the baby's once-cute eyes and mouth began to blacken, giving the poster a much creepier appearance

The store's owner, Masanao Itaya, told Fuji News Network last year that he noticed the ink melting due to the scorching heat, with temperatures hitting 32.6°C.

He planned to replace the sign, but with Japan's Obon holidays approaching (13 August - 16 August), he decided to leave it up for a while longer, creating a spontaneous 'summer horror experience' for passersby.

Since then, people have stopped by to snap photos of the eerie transformation, and the sign — up for over a decade — has become something of a local attraction.

Here's a more recent look at the sign, according to Google Maps:
