[NEW UPDATE] ‘Paperman’ to be Expanded into Full-Length Feature 'Paperboy'

‘Paperman’ to be expanded into full-length feature 'Paperboy'

‘Paperboy’ - as the expanded feature will be known - was officially launched earlier this month at the European co-production and distribution ‘Cartoon Movie’ forum.

It's the brainchild of creators Richard Kelly and Sean William Ryan, who co-directed the original short, and have enlisted the expertise of writer and script editor Richard Hansom.

The Papermen has already been selected for 40 international festivals, including the forthcoming Bucharest International Film Festival and the second annual Irish Film Festival in India

The Irish Film Board provided a development loan for the project, following its selection for ‘Cartoon Movie.’

The dialogue-free short unfolds in 1940s Manhattan, where a lonely young man is hit by a flying piece of paper while standing on a train platform.

The clip is reminiscent of Pixar magic, employing a silent technique used in the beginning of films "Up" and "Wall-E."

Disney released 'Paperman' online

For those who didn’t catch it in theaters when it accompanied Wreck-It Ralph at the tail end of last year, Disney Animation’s Paperman has debuted online.

In the meantime, everybody can see the whole short in 2D, thanks to the Disney Animation YouTube channel.

With the Oscars now just a handful of weeks away, one of the most intriguing nominees has finally arrived online, and while it may be short in length, it’s an absolute must-watch.

'Paperman' gets Oscar nomination

Paperman is nominated for Best Animated Short Film at this year’s Oscars.

This Oscar-nominated short, Paperman, by first-time director John Kahrs and a small team at Walt Disney Animation Studios is a sweet, nostalgic joy.

It is one of five films nominated in the short animation category at the 85th Academy Awards which take place on Sunday February 24.

CG and classic hand-drawn hybrid animation

“As exciting a time that we live in right now, with so many CG features being done, that kind of stylized photo-realism can’t be the only way that animation can look,” Kahrs said.

The seamless hand-drawn and computer combo — created by a group of just 12 artists and first-time director John Kahrs — is something new in the world.

This hybrid technique, which utilized the in-house tool Meander as well as Disney artists from both their hand-drawing and CG divisions, is just the latest groundbreaking animation innovation.

Though Paperman may have a limited color palette, the sky's the limit when it comes to the innovative technology that actually made this animated short possible.
