On 20 February 1956, Tunku Abdul Rahman and the Merdeka delegation returned from London after signing the Independence of Malaya Agreement.
They received a warm welcome as they arrived in Batu Berendam Airport, Melaka, and were paraded accompanied by youths on motorcycles and cars all the way to Padang Pahlawan.
There, Tunku Abdul Rahman made the declaration that the Federation of Malaya would gain its independence on 31 August 1957.
Cries of “Merdeka” echoed through the stadium flooded by 100,000 people who came from all corners of the Federation of Malaya.

Tunku Abdul Rahman arrived at Padang Merdeka and joined in observing two minutes of darkness.

The lights were switched back on and the Union Flag was lowered, as the royal anthem God Save The Queen was played.
The new Flag of Malaya was raised as the national anthem Negaraku was played, followed by seven chants of “Merdeka” by the crowd.
Tunku Abdul Rahman gave a speech hailing the ceremony as the “greatest moment in the life of the Malayan people”. The event ended at 1am.

At Stadium Merdeka, Tunku reads the Proclamation of Independence and shouts “Merdeka!” seven times with the crowd joining in.
The ceremony continued with the raising of the National Flag of Malaya, accompanied by the national anthem and a 21-gun salute, followed by an azan call and thanksgiving prayer.
A total of 101 cannon shots were also fired to mark the occasion.
