In the United States, both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) restrict cell phone usage on aircraft, but for different reasons.
The FAA prohibits in-flight use of wireless devices because of potential interference to the aircraft’s navigation and communication systems, while the FCC banned the use of mobile phones on airborne aircraft in order to prevent disruption to cellular towers on the ground.
Electromagnetic interference to aircraft systems is the most common argument offered for banning mobile phones (and other passenger electronic devices) on planes.
