"Najib Is Allah's Chosen One" And Other Remarks That Were Uttered At UMNO General Assembly
Malaysia's ruling party's general assembly ended on Saturday, 12 December.
1. Penang UMNO Delegate Ahmad Darus, who was debating on religion and education, labelled the uniform of MAS stewardesses as "indecent and against Islamic teaching". Deeming them "too revealing", Ahmad offered sewing services to help them cover up, noting that women at his party branches were good at sewing.
"I think many of the Wanita chiefs at our party branches are actually tailors. If (MAS) does not have money (to sew up the uniforms), then send them to the branch Wanita chiefs, they can help sew them up," he said.
"The men are dressed decently but the women, we let them wear 'unsewn clothes'. I cannot understand... the uniforms are prepared by us (government-owned MAS), it is not like they are free to wear according to their whims," he added, apparently referring to the 'slits' in the MAS air stewardesses' uniform's bottom part.
He then shared his observations of sporting attire among the "Caucasians and Jews".
"I watch volleyball, what do the (Caucasian) men wear? Shorts. But what do the women wear? Just underwear. This is the way of the Caucasians, the Jews. Look at other sports, it's the same... even for tennis, it's the same. The men dress decently, with their shorts sometimes up to their knees. But what do their women wear? Do we want MAS to emulate the Jews? I don't understand," Malaysiakini reported Ahmad as saying.
Maybe the Penang UMNO Delegate is not aware that in a poll conducted by Skytrax, MAS cabin crew's uniform was, in fact, named among the top 10 nicest cabin crew uniform by travellers. It was ranked 2nd nicest in the list, placing above Qatar Airways, Emirates, and even Lufthansa among others.
2. Kelantan UMNO Delegate Abdullah Mat Yassim, in debating the motion on the economy, urged the UMNO top leadership to stop awarding big projects to towkays (business owners) who support the DAP. Abdullah said this is because most projects are spearheaded by big companies which in turn give aid to the DAP.
"DAP is UMNO's enemy," warned Umno Kelantan Delegate Abdullah Mat Yassin, reiterating that the onus was on the heads of government departments to ensure that projects awarded by them don't fall into the hands of the "enemies" of UMNO/Barisan Nasional (BN). According to FMT, Abdullah claimed that the Chinese businessmen who got hold of government projects were also contributing to DAP.
"Many projects given out by the government are falling into the hands of pro-DAP Chinese businessmen. These projects are secured by the big companies who in turn contribute to DAP. I want to ask help from department heads and the top leadership to ensure that towkays who are pro-DAP will not be awarded big projects," he said at the Umno annual general assembly.
3. UMNO lawmaker Othman Aziz, in debating Najib's policy speech at the 69th UMNO General Assembly, claimed that Najib Abdul Razak has been chosen by the Allah to be the 6th PM of this nation
"Not everyone can be a prime minister. There's only one of him. The reason Allah chose him was because he is the chosen one," the Jerlun Umno division head said, referring to Najib, to the thunderous applause of nearly 3,000 delegates there.
Adding that Najib "has admirable professional management skills; he has the delegates and tools of management", he called on UMNO members to work together with Najib and to have a sense of belonging in the party.
"We are a big party and Datuk Seri (Najib) can’t do everything himself."
Referring to criticisms on PM Najib, who is under pressure over alleged financial scandals involving his brainchild 1MDB and RM2.6 billion donation channelled into his personal accounts, Othman was quoted by The Malaysia Insider as saying:
"That is why as a prime minister Datuk Seri Najib is being attacked from all sides because he is the prime minister. If we get attacked, we probably would not be able to stand it. This is because Datuk Seri Najib has excellent professional management skill. So I want to tell (everyone) that we should not mess with our head to think like a prime minister. Just do the work entrusted to us."
