1. Applying moisturiser while skin is dry - when your skin is completely dry, moisturiser isn't absorbed as effectively

According to a WebMD Medical Reference that was medically reviewed by Dr Sheena Meredith, applying moisturiser on dry skin is least likely to help. Put on moisturiser when your skin is still damp. That way, the moisturiser will trap the moisture still on your skin.

2. Using harsh soaps that leave your skin feeling tight - this will ultimately result in dryer skin

Soap is an emulsifier that removes oils on the skin. The more often skin is scrubbed with soap, the more oil is removed, ultimately resulting in dryer skin - skin that feels overly tight after showering may indicate excess removal of natural skin oils.

3. Indulging in hot steamy showers - although showers add water to the skin, the evaporation of this water after the completion of the immersion will result in dryer skin

Hot steamy showers may soothe your body but it can dry out the natural oils in your skin more quickly. Keep showers short and the shower temperature at lukewarm.

4. Hiding out at indoor places with air-conditioning to escape sun damage - Air conditioners pull out humidity from the air in a room and rob the outer layer of the epidermis of your skin

Stay moisturised, especially if you are exposed to air conditioned environments on a regular basis. When air-conditioners remove the water or humidity content from a room, our skin will start shrivelling. This worsens when there is an extreme change in climate when one steps out of an air-conditioned office or car into the blazing hot sun - a sudden change in temperatures is extremely stressful for the body.
