Only The Japanese Can Pull Off Unique Celebrations Like These Every Single Year
One of them includes a goblin riding a horse!
Ever heard of matsuri before?
You can get a taste of Japan all-year-round across the world, and it never fails to impress. But there's something special about summers in Japan that you will only find, well, in Japan.
Because Summer is the season of matsuri or festivals, which consist of incredible celebrations that infuse heritage, history, and customs, with a bright burst of energy, parades, and dancing!
If you haven't visited Japan during the Summer, this is your chance to do so. And here's why:
1. Gion Matsuri (Kyoto)
Gion Matsuri is the most famous festival in Japan and happens throughout the month of July. Accessible by flying into Osaka and making your way towards Kyoto, this festival boasts many different events that can be enjoyed from street view.
The grand procession, Yamaboko Junko, takes place on the 17th and 24th of July along Kawaramachi and Oike Street, and is absolutely spectacular!
2. Asakusa Samba Carnival (Tokyo)
Brazil is home to the largest Japanese community outside Japan, who knew?
As such, cultural ties between the two nations are tight, and samba has become a surprisingly common hobby in Japan.
The Asakusa Samba Carnival is one of the most lively and popular summer festivals. Situated in Tokyo, this August matsuri attracts over half a million visitors every year.
3. Tenjin Matsuri (Osaka)
Ranked as one of the top three festivals in Japan, the 'Festival of Gods' includes grand parades on both land and water!
The long procession features costumed characters, including Sarutahiko - a long-nosed goblin riding a horse, a ceremonial float accompanied by festival music, lion dancers, umbrella dancers, and much more.
You can catch this matsuri on the 24th and 25th July every year.
4. Nebuta Matsuri (Aomori)
By far the most unique, this breathtaking festival features vivid floats shaped as mythological and historical Japanese characters.
The intricate designs are constructed from painted washi paper over a wire frame and take an entire year to construct; they can be up to nine meters wide and five meters tall.
Not to missed, this festival takes place from the 2nd to 7th of August in Aomori City, accessible from Tokyo via the JR East Pass.
5. Sapporo Summer Festival
Lasting for about a month from July to August, this festival attracts over a million visitors to its famous Beer Garden, which stretched for six blocks along Odori Park.
Festivities include a Hokkai Bon Odori dance; the Sapporo Bazaar antique fair, the Tanuki Festival along the Tanukikoji shopping street; the Susukino Festival, and more!
