M'sian City Life #1: The Unlikely Reason Why This KL Guy Keeps An Afro Since He Was 17
A guy with a big hair but with a bigger heart.
Guys, what was the most funky hairstyle you have ever had? Have you ever attempted to keep an afro AND made sure it stay fabulous, like Ross Stephenson here?
Look at that hair!
Having grown out the afro since he was 17, it’s not unusual to have people staring at him - or rather, his hair - everywhere Ross goes. In fact, it is more often than not a conversation starter between him and random strangers, such as this kakak he met at the mamak:
"What happened earlier this afternoon is a good example of why I keep it.
While waiting for my laundry to finish at the self-service dobi nearby my house, I decided to tapau (take away) food from a Malay food stall nearby.
I've never been there before, so when one of the Malay kakak saw me, she exclaimed loudly: Wah rambut besar!" (Wow, your hair is huge!).
She was laughing and smiling away. I told her it was 'original'," he wrote in a Facebook post.
"She didn't believe me. She asked me: "Sumpah?" (You swear it's original?)
Then she came over to my table, and I said: "You cuba rasa" (Come and touch it for yourself) and she happily touched my hair and parted it, looking for the scalp to see if it was real or a wig!
Then she sat and I chatted with her about it, soon joined by another staff there," he recounted.
The multi-talented entertainer has definitely put in some great effort to stand out from the crowd, just think about all the grooming needed to make an afro look good! But he’s not just doing it for style, it’s actually for a good cause close to his heart.
In continuation of the dobi story, Ross wrote, "I went in without any expectations. I came out leaving 2 people smiling and laughing.
Be it at a shop, at the toll booth, or while walking on the street. I don't even have to say a word, and I can see them smiling from the corner of my eye.
That's why I keep my afro, because it brings joy to people.
Thank You, God!"
If you happen to bump into Ross on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, do remember to ask him for a free selfie with his afro. You will even have the opportunity of touching his ever groovy afro, just remember to ask politely!
With the beauty of his afro, Ross signed up with a talent agent and was blessed to have several opportunities to get featured in ad’s by Petronas, Hotlink, Cool Tea, Sunway Pyramid, and others.
bfm.myHis hair affair aside, Ross is also a jack of all trades — he has been hired as an emcee, comedian, magician and recently, a mad scientist as well!
