The pictures filling up Twitter and Facebook news feeds show people fearlessly wrapping sticky tape around their heads, with total disregard for protecting sensitive and potentially painful areas like their eyes or eyebrows.

The Independent notes that, "While the hashtag was used on Twitter October last year, in the 10 hours since Sellotape selfie Twitter and Facebook account were created, hundreds of people across the world have joined in and posted photos."

The trend was started by Brighton University student Lizzie Durley. It has attracted over 100,000 likes on Facebook in the past two days.

Lizzy said: "I got the idea from Jim Carrey's office scene in 'Yes Man'. I was having a bad day and remembered that scene from the film which really tickled me.
