But of course, you can have it anytime you want, be it as an afternoon snack, for breakfast, or even supper. 

And the great thing about getting egg tarts in Malaysia is that you have so many options to choose from — there are Portuguese egg tarts that boast a caramelised top, traditional egg tarts that use Chinese puff pastry, and cookie shell egg tarts for a crumbly, good bite, among others. 

But where to get the best egg tarts leh? Come, take a look at this list that highlights must-try places in KL and Selangor for really yummy egg tarts:

1. TK Bakery [Non-halal]

Formerly known as Tong Kee Brothers Confectionary, TK Bakery first started out as a small dim sum business before expanding as a bakery. They now sell about 10,000 egg tarts daily, holding the record for the largest egg tart retailer in the country in the Malaysia Book of Records. 

Each egg tart, priced at about RM2.90, comes with silky custard and flaky puff pastry. Those who love their egg tarts extra buttery and flavourful can also opt for their Butter Egg Tart.

2. Mémorie Café [Halal]

Eurasian cafe Mémorie Café offers an amalgamation of Portuguese, Dutch, British, Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Peranakan cuisine. Their food is remarkable, but the star of the show is their Portuguese egg tarts, which boast a charred, caramelised egg custard in a crunchy shell. 

Mémorie Café prepares their Portuguese egg tarts fresh daily, which come in a box of six pieces that cost about RM24. 

They have an outlet at Midfields Square, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity, One Utama, and IOI City Mall. 

3. Nando's [Halal]

Had no idea that Nando's serves egg tarts? Us too! Known as Portuguese Nata, the snack is highly recommended by many egg tart lovers, who share that it has a delectable, creamy custard base with a hint of smoky flavour.

Nando's shares that this creamy and crunchy traditional Portuguese custard tart is made only with one of the finest French butters and authentic free-range eggs. 

Each Portuguese Nata costs RM5.20. 

4. Red Kettle [Non-halal]

Most, if not all, would agree that Red Kettle's Portuguese egg tarts are exceptionally creamy with a buttery shortcrust pastry.

Located in Taman Bukit Desa and at The Starling Mall in Damansara Uptown, Red Kettle bakes their Portugese egg tarts fresh daily. And you better get your hands on them quickly, as their egg tarts run out fast! 

A box of six pieces costs about RM35. 

5. Oriental Kopi [Muslim-friendly]

If you didn't know, Oriental Kopi is listed in the Malaysia Book of Records — they hold the record for the thickest egg tart in the country!

Just look at their Portuguese egg tart; you'll see it truly lives up to its achievement. Taste-wise, the tart is flaky and fluffy with a very creamy egg custard that melts in your mouth.

They have outlets in Puchong, Sunway Pyramid, Pavilion Bukit Jalil, and Mid Valley Megamall.

6. Nam Heong Ipoh [Non-halal]

One of the go-to places for superb egg tarts in Ipoh is Nam Heong Ipoh, which has since expanded to the Klang Valley. You can find them at Da Men Mall, MyTown, One Utama, Pavilion KL, Sunway Pyramid, Pinnacle Sri Petaling, Jalan Sultan, MainPlace, and LalaPort BBCC. 

Using Chinese puff pastry, Nam Heong's egg tarts are crisp and light, and pair well with the exceptionally smooth and silky custard. 

Each egg tart costs RM3.71. 

7. Miki Bakery [Muslim-friendly]

Miki Bakery is possibly the only bakery that offers a variety of egg tarts.

It offers Portuguese egg tarts with a charred egg custard and a flaky shell that netizens have likened to croissants. There are also bamboo charcoal egg tarts, which boast an earthy, smoky flavour, as well as German egg tarts, which use a cookie base for their outer shell.

In other words, they offer something for everyone. They currently have outlets at Atria Shopping Mall, The Starling Mall, and Berjaya Times Square.

Each egg tart costs RM3.60 onwards.

8. Foo Hing Dim Sum [Non-halal]

Foo Hing Dim Sum is a name that needs no introduction. The restaurant can be packed to the brim even on a weekday, as many love its dim sum offerings. 

Its Portuguese egg tart is also one of a kind. As you bite into the tart, the shell breaks into pieces, pairing well with the custard that melts immediately. 

Foo Hing Dim Sum currently has two outlets — in Puchong and Taipan. We recommend heading to the restaurant early in the morning to avoid the long queue!
