3 July: Permanent forest reserve areas in the peninsula should be expanded

The permanent forest reserve areas in the peninsula should be expanded to five million hectares from the current 4.7 million hectares, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk G. Palanivel said.

"Effective efforts must be taken to ensure sustainable forest management and to prevent poaching and illegal killing of endangered animals," he said after presenting certificates to 74 participants of Forest Rangers Course at the Forest Research Institute of MAlaysia (FRIM) on Tuesday (2 Jul).

At present, Malaysia only has approximately 2,000 forest rangers stationed in permanent forest reserve areas across the country. Palanivel said the government has agreed to double that number.

Christopher Potter told the environment watchdog that Malaysia has a deforestation hotspot on the western coastal area of Perak, "Many areas in Sarawak have been detected with forest cover change over the past 2 years."

Suspicious logging carried out at odd hours of the night?

Perak DAP head Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham revealed that there had been many complaints of logging in the Manjong district of Perak, including Segari and his own Parliamentary constituency of Beruas.
