12 MRT Girders Fell From A 51-Tonne Lorry Causing Massive Traffic Jam In Cheras
A massive traffic jam was caused on Sunday morning due to 12 concrete girders falling off a trailer at Jalan Cheras near the Billion Roundabout flyover.
Twelve pieces of concrete tunnel lining segments for the MRT project fell from a 51-tonne lorry near Taman Billion along Jalan Cheras. The accident happened at approximately 11am on Sunday.
The incident happened when the trailer was forced to make an emergency break as the traffic ahead of it suddenly stopped. A huge traffic jam was caused near the Billion Roundabout flyover.
According to police sources, the incident happened at 11.30am at Batu 5 ½, Jalan Cheras. The 12 girders fell when a trailer carrying 16 MRT segmented concrete girders for the Pudu underground MRT project toppled after the trailer driver hit the emergency brake due to a sudden stop in traffic.
thestar.com.myOut of the 12 concrete girders that fell, 10 were two-ton girders, while the other two were one-ton girders. Traffic remained backed-up despite works to move the girders ending at 1.15pm.
According to a statement issued by MRT Corp, the lorry swerved a little but could not avoid hitting the vehicle in front. According to Star Radio Traffic tweet, traffic remained congested at 2.02pm even though the 12 fallen girders had been cleared up.
