Millions of Free 1Malaysia Netbooks Distributed

The government has distributed 1.7 million 1Malaysia netbooks in an effort to increase computer literacy in the rural community.

A total of 1.7 million 1Malaysia netbooks have been distributed to students in the government's efforts to increase computer literacy in the rural community, said Deputy Minister of Communications and Mutimedia Datuk Jalani Johari.

All the netbooks came with a year’s warranty if damaged. Steps were also being taken to improve wireless access with the co-operation of Internet service providers, Jalani added.

Other government efforts to increase computer literacy in the rural community

The efforts include the creation of 4,000 villages equipped with wireless broadband internet or WiFi throughout the country. In addition, there were 355 broadband centres across the country's interior region.

The national broadband coverage was a reported 66.7% on 2 July 2013 (from 21.8% in 2008). Datuk Jailani Johari said the increase was a result of various programmes implemented by the ministry & Malaysian Communication & Multimedia commission.
