In a freak accident on Tuesday, 3 October, a fitness enthusiast was killed when a barbell fell on him while he was training at a gym

20-year-old Wang Zongren, a student at the Malaysian Institute of Art, died while trying to lift a 108kg barbell in a fitness centre in Ampang Jaya in Selangor at about 8pm.

One of Wang's friends, who was in the gym, suspected that Wang had lost control of the barbell due to lack of strength, thus causing it to slip and crush his neck.

There were five people at the gym during the freak accident, including Wang. However, none of them actually saw it happen.

According to a report in the China Press, three friends were in the prayer room while one friend had gone out for a smoke. When they returned, they found Wang unconscious with the barbell on his neck.

They then called for help and moved the barbell away together, China Press reported.

Wang, a fitness enthusiast who used to weigh 100kg, reduced his weight to about 80kg after he started training at the gym regularly

According to his friend, Wang went to the gym five days a week and was training for a bodybuilding competition.

He said that Wang had several years of fitness experience, so it was unlikely that his death was caused by the wrong use of equipment.
