While many young individuals are drawn to tech and modern professions, a 25-year-old woman from Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, is boldly carving a niche for herself in the traditional wet market business

Ummi Safiyyah Baharudin is proudly breaking the stereotype by working as a butcher at a stall located in Pasar Raja Bot, also known as the Chow Kit Road Market.

According to Harian Metro, she was initially working in an office before transitioning to become a full-time butcher at the shop owned by her cousin of the same age, Nur Farah Izzati, in 2021.

Despite the challenges typically associated with the wet market business, Ummi takes pride in her profession

"The market does come with its own odour. Especially when I'm cutting chicken, there's bound to be some lingering scent on my clothes. However, I've grown accustomed to it and am happy working here," the Malay daily quoted her as saying.

Ummi also stated that, despite being young, she is not embarrassed to work in the wet market because she genuinely has a passion for business.

"I genuinely enjoy this work because it requires unique skills. It took me three months to master the proper techniques and methods for cutting chicken to ensure customer satisfaction," said Ummi.

Ummi also shared that she and her cousin often encounter customers who try to strike up conversations due to their age

Being the only young butchers in a place dominated by older vendors, Ummi admits that they do attract a fair share of attention and light-hearted teasing.

Nevertheless, she does not mind the friendly banter that often occurs between vendors and their regular customers.
