Four Marathon Runners Injured After An Event Volunteer Accidentally Drove Into Them
The injured runners have been sent to two separate hospitals for treatment.
Four runners of the Run Out Pahang Marathon 2018 were injured after an event volunteer accidentally crashed into them yesterday, 11 March
According to The Star, the 28-year-old driver had been monitoring the runners from her car as they were heading from Bukit Istana to Kota SAS in Kuantan, Pahang.
The incident happened around 8.25am when the volunteer noticed several participants running outside the designated lane
She tried to brake and stop the car to direct them back to the designated path, but lost control instead.
Kuantan police chief ACP Mohd Noor Yusof Ali said, “She was believed to have lost control of the vehicle, and it veered to the left lane before hitting the runners.”
Three of the injured participants were sent to the UIA Hospital while another was sent to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan for treatment
The injured runners were Ahmad Fakhri Sulaiman, Chua Yennie, Nurul Huda
Ahmad Razali and Haslinda Othman.
Ahmad Fakhri suffered injuries to his head and left leg while Chua was hurt on her face and head.
Nurul Huda reportedly broke her right leg while Haslinda hurt her head, legs and left arm.
According to the marathon organisers’ Instagram page, there have also been false rumours claiming that the accident occurred due to the carelessness of an internal party
The post explained that the organiser’s internal team operated merely in the designated areas and that professionalism was maintained throughout the event.
“For this reason, we would like the public to know that the safety of our runners has always been our top priority and we will constantly work harder every year to enhance it.”ACP Mohd Noor said that a meeting would be held with sports associations, district government departments, NGOs and event organisers to discuss measures to prevent such incidents from occurring again
The marathon, which was organised by a Kuala Lumpur-based company with five years of experience in organising such events, was held in collaboration with the Pahang Athletics Association and Pahang Tourism Office.
It was learnt that the marathon had been approved by the Malaysian Sports Commissioner’s Office and Kuantan Municipal Council.
