Son Burns Down Family Home After His Mother Refused To Give Him Money
The son had past issues with drug addiction.
A 33-year-old man was arrested for allegedly burning down his family home in Kuantan after his mother refused to give him money
A day prior to the incident, which happened on Friday, 19 January, neighbours say the unemployed man was angry with his mother and had made threats. But no one believed he would really do it.
According to a report in NST Online, one of the neighbours had heard the son threatening to retaliate by burning the house when the mother refused to give him money. However, they intervened by advising the son.
"I even called the imam for advice and managed to cool things down then. We never expect him to do it," the neighbour told NST Online.
Reportedly, according to the neighbour, the son had past issues with drug addiction.
Maran police chief DSP Norzamri Abd Rahman confirmed the motive. The son acted on his threats and carried out the act at 2pm.
"There were no casualties in the fire as the suspect's mother, 66, had gone to live with another son due to the suspect’s aggressive behaviour of the suspect.
"The suspect was nabbed near the house and from initial investigations, it is believed he started the fire by burning a mattress in the house," Norzamri was quoted as saying in a report by The Malaysian Insight, yesterday, 20 January.
While fire department personnel successfully doused the flames within 30 minutes, the fire destroyed about 80% of the brick and wooden house, causing losses amounting to about RM90,000
The jobless son, who has been detained under Section 436 of the Penal Code for causing mischief with fire, has a criminal record, DSP Norzamri added.
