An 83-Year-Old Was Robbed At Knifepoint By Her Own Relatives
The incident occurred at her house in Bagan Ajam, Penang.
A senior citizen was robbed of her jewellery by three of her relatives in Bagan Ajam, Penang
According to North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor, the victim was home alone at the time of the incident as her 60-year-old son, who lived with her, had gone out.
She was woken by knocks on her door at about 6am on Wednesday, 1 August, New Straits Times reported.
When the 83-year-old went to answer the door, someone grabbed her from behind and covered her face before pointing a knife to her chest
The robber ordered her to remove the gold chain and gold bracelet that she was wearing.
"After taking the items, the suspect fled using the back door," said Noorzainy.
Upon inspection, no signs of forced entry were found.
After an investigation, the police discovered that the crime was committed by the woman's stepdaughter and two granddaughters who resorted to stealing from her to settle their debts
Noorzainy said that the suspects, aged between 17 and 42, were arrested at another house at 1.30pm on the same day, according to New Straits Times.
"During the arrest, police seized a cell phone, RM1,250, a goldchain, a gold bracelet, and a goldsmith ticket. Losses are estimated at RM15,000," he added.
A goldsmith had admitted to buying the items from the trio for RM2,000.
The three suspects do not have criminal records, and urine tests concluded that they were not on drugs
The suspects have been remanded for seven days under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery and gang robbery, The Star reported.
