Anwar Warns School Bus Operators Will Lose Licence If They Raise Fares

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today, 14 June, warned school bus and public transport operators against raising their fares

Anwar said that those listed under the Subsidised Diesel Control System would see their licences cancelled if they increased prices despite benefitting from diesel subsidies, reported the New Straits Times.

"I don't know about others but if it were me, if you raise fares while getting subsidies, we will revoke your license, cancel your company... otherwise our children in school will be burdened," he said.

"Why raise prices if you benefit from the diesel subsidy?

"We don't exploit the poor, and savings from targeted subsidies can be redirected to aid the people through the RM10 billion Rahmah Cash Aid," he said during his speech at the Public Service Department's Madani Aspirations gathering in Putrajaya.

He said bus operators need to register with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry if they have not yet received the fleet card

The fleet card will allow school bus operators to continue enjoying a quota of 1,800 litres of diesel per month for RM1.88 per litre, Anwar explained.

The prime minister's warning comes after several businesses have raised their fares following a nearly 50% hike in diesel prices this week:
