CCTV Video Shows Container Truck Crushing Dozens Of Vehicles At Balikpapan Traffic Light

Five people were killed, four are critically injured with another 17 suffering minor injuries.

Early Friday morning, 21 January, a container truck slammed and crushed through a line of a number of vehicles and over a dozen motorcycles at a traffic light in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia

The accident occurred at the intersection leading to Jalan Soekarno-Hatta in Muara Rapak Village.

A large container truck is seen speeding towards cars and motorcycles that had been waiting at the traffic light before it collides into them, according to closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the accident.

The harrowing pileup involved two pickup trucks, two cars, two minivans, six multi-purpose vehicles and 14 motorcycles at the scene

The truck was fully loaded with lime used for water treatment.

The truck driver claimed that he shifted his truck into low gear to slow it down when approaching the area and tried to apply the brakes, but it did not work, according to a Bernama report.

As of this report, five people are killed and four are critically injured

There are 17 others who suffered minor injuries in the accident, reported a local outlet.

The victims are being treated at Khanujoso, Beriman, and Ibnu Sina hospitals.

Meanwhile, the truck driver, who was apprehended immediately after the accident, is currently under police custody at the Balikpapan City Police headquarters, according to detiknews.

So far, no charges have been filed as the driver is still undergoing questioning.
