The Mexican police is grappling with the case

A Mexican man who repeatedly padlocked his girlfriend's jeans so that she wouldn't cheat on him is unlikely to be charged for his ill treatment.

A 25-year-old woman was in excruciating pain after being unable to use the toilet for several hours after her boyfriend secured the belt-loops of her jeans with a padlock, CNN reported.

The woman told Mexican police that her 40-year-old boyfriend had padlocked her for years. She had been too afraid of him to use scissors to cut her jeans to free herself.

Police said the woman, from the small provincial town of Zacatlan in the state of Veracruz, could not take it anymore.

Police arrested the man, who then produced a key to unlock the padlock. The woman refused to press charges after his arrest. Despite being detained by police, he was released a few hours later.

He later released a statement saying he would never padlock or abuse his girlfriend again. Veracruz women's rights activist Araceli Gonzalez told CNN the community and authorities had failed the woman.
