CityJet Wings Fall Off In Midair During Flight From London To Florence

Passengers feared for their lives when part of the wing of an airliner they were flying on suddenly fell off mid-flight.

The 61 passengers on board the CityJet flight from London to Florence were terrified when they heard a loud bang shortly after take off, and a section of the left wing almost two metres long detached from the plane.
The Section Of Wing Was Left Dangling Precariously Under The Plane As It Circled Back Over The Thames Estuary Returned To The Airport
The plane then circled the Thames estuary before making an emergency landing back at London City Airport, where it was met by an emergency crew.
Despite the Avro Rj85′s damaged state, the pilot managed to land the aircraft after radio discussions with maintenance experts on the ground.

According To CityJet, The WX 281 Flight Had Just Taken Off From London When The Cover Of The Operating Mechanism On The Wing Became Partially Detached
A CityJet spokesman said the cover of the operating mechanism on the wing became partially detached just after the plane had taken off from London City Airport.
"Air Traffic Control were notified and the aircraft returned making a normal approach and landing. The flight returned to London City Airport due to a mechanical issue."
"The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew disembarked normally. Passengers are being re-directed on another aircraft and were departed with a two hour delay," said a CityJet spokesman.

The Telegraph's Cole Moreton was onboard the plane, and filmed exclusive footage showing what appears to be part of the engine housing hanging off the wing of the Avro RJ85 aircraft.
