According to experts, the cold weather currently enveloping Malaysia is expected to last until February of next year
The cold weather phenomenon following the Northeast monsoon involved a change in cold winds blowing in from China, as well as unending rain clouds that started in early November, according to Malaysian Meteorological Department deputy director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip in a Bernama report.
"There are a lot of rain clouds. [Due to] the sun's rays being somewhat shielded, [this] causes the temperature to be lower compared to other periods of the year," he said.
In addition, he said the sun's position will be far into the southern hemisphere due to the angle of the earth's rotation around the sun in December, causing countries in the northern hemisphere to experience winter. The solar position will also will affect countries like Malaysia that lie on the equator.
Temperatures could plunge to as low as 22°C.
The temperature will also vary based on the geography or elevation of an area
For instance, Mohd Hisham said the cold spell will render areas like Genting Highlands even chillier during this period.
Flat lands in the interior of the peninsula, in states such as Kelantan, Pahang, and Perak, can also expect lower temperatures in comparison with other areas.
"In 2014, the temperature in Kuala Krai, Kelantan was recorded between 17°C and 18°C. So, it is possible that it could happen again in that area," he added.
According to University Malaya Meteorologist Professor Dr Azizan Abu Salmah, the chilly conditions would also prevail in several locations in Terengganu and Kedah. However, Kedahans can expect temperamental weather.
"If you are in Kedah, during the day it will be scorching hot, while at night it will be cold," he said.
