Digi Is Now The Most Subscribed Telco In Malaysia

The telco gained a total of 211k new subscribers in the last quarter.

Digi has closed the quarter as the most subscribed telco in Malaysia, gaining 211k new subscribers amidst the recent telco price wars

According to Digi's recent Q1 2016 results, the telco boasts having a total of 12.3 million subscribers, the most among all the other telcos companies in Malaysia.

There are 1.9 million Digi postpaid subscribers, up from 1.84 million subscribers in 4Q 2015. It added 62k postpaid subscribers.

For prepaid, Digi added 149k prepaid subscribers in 1Q16, totalling up the prepaid base to 10.4 million (10,434).

However, Digi's average revenue per user (ARPU) has reduced for both prepaid and postpaid, despite seeing a consistent increase in the number of subscribers

Digital News Asia noted that Digi’s first quarter prepaid ARPU (the amount prepaid subscribers spent a month on average) has hit an all-time low of RM35 a month, based on data available from 2002 till now.

According to the telco's quarterly report, the prepaid revenue dropped a total of 5% for the same period last year.

However, Digi’s postpaid services is performing better in terms of overall revenue with an increase of 7%.

For Q1 2016, Digi reported a slight dip of revenue at RM1.56 billion compared to the same period last year at RM1.58 billion. Profit after tax dipped to RM399 million (Q1 2015: RM479 million) but it is an improvement of 4.5% from the previous quarter in Q4 2015.
